Website speed optimization

Why is optimizing your website speed so important? And what are the essential actions you should take to achieve the results you’re aiming for?

Introduction

Many businesses and brands invest heavily in building their websites, only to discover disappointing results: low conversion rates, high bounce rates, and poor organic performance on Google.

A fundamental principle to understand here: websites with poor backend performance often fail to meet their strategic, marketing, and sales goals. No matter how beautiful or impressive a site looks, if it doesn’t perform, it can’t serve its purpose as a business tool.

One of the most critical factors affecting performance is website speed. Slow websites frustrate users, drive them away, and damage brand perception. On top of that, speed plays a major role in your Google rankings—some estimates say speed impacts up to 25% of your overall SEO score. That means slow sites lose twice: fewer organic visitors, and fewer users who stay long enough to engage or convert.

Given this, site speed optimization is not optional—it must be built into your website development and SEO strategy. The best approach is to design and build the website with speed in mind from the beginning. However, you can also take action after launch to improve performance scores on tools like Google PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix, ultimately improving your Google ranking.

n this article, we’ll walk you through 6 simple but powerful steps to dramatically improve your website speed, using a real case study from one of our studio’s projects.

Step 1 – Choosing the Right Hosting Provider

One of the first decisions in any web project is choosing a hosting provider that fits your specific needs. Common questions include: Should I choose a host based in my country or abroad? Shared hosting or VPS? What storage capacity do I need? Will it be easy to upgrade or migrate in the future?

For our topic - site loading speed - hosting is key. Every resource on your site comes from your server. One client of ours originally hosted their blog on a budget-friendly provider (less than $5/month). Unfortunately, the results showed—the site was so slow it was almost unusable. Our first move was upgrading to a more reliable provider, with better SSD storage and optional CDN support (more on that below).

Bottom line: Hosting can drastically impact speed. Choose a reliable hosting company with packages that suit your needs - based on traffic volume, storage, and performance.

We highly recommend Cloudways, which offers scalable plans and excellent performance.

Step 2 – Choosing the Right Theme

Themes can significantly speed up the design process. However, a common mistake is selecting a heavy prebuilt theme and then customizing it so much that the final site carries both the original theme code and all the custom edits - creating unnecessary bulk.

In our optimization project, we found the client was using an outdated theme (Pojo). We switched to the Hello theme by Elementor - a lightweight theme - and saw an instant improvement in speed scores.

Key takeaways: 1 - Always prefer lightweight themes like Hello. 2 - If you must use a heavier theme, minimize custom changes as much as possible.

Step 3 – Compressing & Optimizing Images

Page weight depends heavily on the size and number of images. Large images slow down page load times, especially when their actual display size is smaller than the uploaded image.

Solutions:

  1. Use a plugin like compress JPEG & PNG images to automatically optimize images upon upload.
  2. Manually compress images before uploading—this can reduce file size by up to 90% without noticeable quality loss.

Step 4 – Installing a Caching Plugin

Caching plugins can significantly boost your site speed by:

  1. Saving cached versions for returning visitors
  2. Minifying JavaScript, CSS, and HTML code
  3. Cleaning up old drafts and post revisions
  4. Integrating CDN
  5. Lazy loading media files

Caching plugins are essential for every WordPress site. Free and premium options are available—choose one that fits your needs.

Our top pick: WP-Rocket.

Step 5 – Lazy Load Media Files

Media-heavy websites (e.g., travel, textile, eCommerce) often suffer from long load times due to numerous images and videos.

Lazy loading defers loading media until the user scrolls to that part of the page.

This significantly reduces initial page load time without compromising user experience.

Most caching plugins include lazy load as a feature. You can also use dedicated plugins or custom code.If you are web developer - follow the link..

Step 6 – Using a CDN

What is a CDN?

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a global network of servers that delivers your website content based on the visitor’s geographic location. Typically, CDNs store images and videos but can also serve static site files like CSS, JavaScript, and HTML. CDN benefits: 1 - Faster load times based on visitor location 2 - Improved security against attacks and data breaches.

How to implement:

Check if your hosting provider offers a built-in CDN (some do it for free).

Alternatively, use an external CDN service for free likecloudflare.

In our client case, upgrading to a better hosting plan included free CDN access, which gave a noticeable speed boost and added protection.

Measuring Speed & Comparing Data

Google PageSpeed Insights is Google's own platform for measuring website quality, offering an overall score based on various success parameters defined by Google.

  • The tool provides separate scores for mobile and desktop performance.
  • It also includes four key categories: Performance, SEO, Best Practices, Accessibility. For the purpose of this guide, we focus on the Performance metric, which directly relates to your website's speed.
  • Scores break down: A score of 90 or above is considered good. Scores between 50–90 are average. Scores below 50 are poor.
  • The scores can fluctuate slightly from test to test, depending on a range of factors.

It directly impacts user experience, SEO rankings, and the overall success of your digital efforts. A slow website will frustrate visitors and reduce your ability to attract and convert traffic - both organically and through other channels. As shown throughout this article, optimizing your website for speed is not a one-time task, but an ongoing process that involves multiple aspects
